# Custom domains

> Serve a sandbox on a domain you own, with automatic SSL. Available on Workspace plans.

A custom domain gives a sandbox a stable address you control, such as `demo.example.com`. If you later replace the sandbox, move the domain to the new one and your links keep working.

Custom domains are available on Workspace plans. The sandbox's own SandyWP URL keeps working alongside the custom domain.

## Connect a domain

1. Open the sandbox, select **Site settings**, then the **Custom Domain** tab.
2. Enter the domain, for example `demo.example.com`, and select **Connect domain**.
3. Add the DNS record SandyWP shows you at your DNS provider.
4. Select **Check DNS**. Once DNS resolves, SandyWP routes the domain, issues an SSL certificate, and updates WordPress to use the new address.

If the DNS record already exists when you connect the domain, it goes live straight away.

## DNS records

Add **one** of these:

| Domain | Record | Name | Value |
| - | - | - | - |
| Subdomain, e.g. `demo.example.com` (recommended) | `CNAME` | `demo` | The target shown in the tab, e.g. `domains.sandywp.dev` |
| Root domain, e.g. `example.com` | `A` | `@` | The IP address(es) shown in the tab |

Two things stop SSL from being issued:

* **A proxy in front of the record.** On Cloudflare, set the record to **DNS only** (grey cloud).
* **Other A or AAAA records** on the same name. Remove them so the domain points only at SandyWP.

DNS changes usually show up within a few minutes, but some providers take longer. Select **Check DNS** again at any time.

## SSL

SSL certificates come from Let's Encrypt and renew automatically. There is nothing to upload or configure.

## Disconnect a domain

Select the trash icon on the **Custom Domain** tab. SandyWP stops serving the domain and points WordPress back at the sandbox URL. You can then connect the domain to a different sandbox.

## Limits

* One custom domain per sandbox.
* A domain can be connected to one sandbox at a time.
* Multisite sandboxes do not support custom domains yet.
* The API equivalent is [`PUT /api/app/sites/{id}/domain`](/api-reference).
